The 2016 Kia Sportage is one of the most famous crossovers in this market segment. Great commercials and some great features it brings made it quite interesting. It is one of the oldest Kia models on the American markets and it went from being a 4×4 SUV vehicle to crossover on U.S. market and it is now competing with Honda CR-V, Ford Escape and Toyota RAV-4. Another very competitive rival is the Nissan Rogue that comes totally updated for the new model year. Kia offers 100,000 mile and seven years warranty, and when compared to competition it has little bit smaller cabin, that can turn down some of its potential buyers.
New model received several new visual and mechanical enhancements, but basically it looks almost the same as before. One of its main signatures is the popular tiger nose grille that was the Audi influence that came to Kia since Peter Schreyer was brought to the design department. It comes with nice wheels, high belt line and swept back headlights. Another thing is that this vehicle looks much sportier than it really is. Although it has some of the nice off-road features like four wheel drive this still is predominantly a family crossover.
Latest changes to the entire Kia lineup will be also implemented here. Redesigned Sportage will bring ice-cubed LED lights like we could see on pro_cee’d GT and Sorento models. Back segment brings further changes and again LED technology improves its look. Tail lights have been redesigned but we are still getting separated reverse and indicator lights similar to what currently available version offers.
2016 Kia Sportage Review
We are sure that passengers will notice the size shortage of the cabin from the start, 2016 Kia Sportage really comes with little bit less space than its competition. In the back it has nice amount of leg room and you can also fold the back seats and then you will have around 55 square feet of cargo that is still nothing comparing to 70 square feet that comes with folding rear seat in Honda CR-V. This model comes with panoramic roof, like most of the new models from Kia range. There’s also an anti-bacterial cloth in the base trim level. When it comes to hi-tech features this vehicle offers 8.2 inch touch screen display and some nice infotainment system that’s also standard on Kia.
There are two different engines on the offer. Base is the 2.4 liter four cylinder engine that’s naturally aspired and pumps out 182 horsepower and 172 pound feet of torque that can’t be really compared with 260 horsepower and 289 pound feet of torque that comes with 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine. When it comes to fuel economy, more powerful unit comes with just one mpg lower EPA range at 20/27 mpg, so you should definitely choose the turbocharged version but have in mind that it comes with higher price tag. Fuel economy with four wheel drive is much less appealing since it can reach 19 mpg in the city conditions and only 23 mpg on the highway.
Same as the other models from this range new Sportage is not too expensive. The base version can be bought for $22,150 and depending on the trim levels and the additional equipment buyers choose its price can go up to almost $35,000 which is the price of the fully equipped SX trim level, while the base SX trim can be bought for $29,900. For those drivers that need all-wheel drive, be ready to pay $1,500 extra over front wheel drive model. This option is available on all trim levels, including base version.
When it comes to the release date we are pretty sure that it will come during September just like it was announced previously. Complete design is already finished, at least that is what reports are suggesting about 2016 Kia Sportage and new model is in test phase. Since we could already see more than few spy photos with decent amount of camouflage we are sure that Kia is preparing many nice changes.
